Crispy, flaky and incredibly addictive, these Cheese Straws can be made at home, with just five ingredients. These flavorful bread sticks are a perfect match for a bowl of soup. They’re also a crowd pleasing finger-food for parties.
Using store-bought puff pastry, you can put together this recipe in no time. I thaw out frozen pastry dough overnight, in the refrigerator. This allows the dough to come to temperature gradually.
I unfold the pastry, which is typically sectioned in 3 panels, and brush olive oil on it. I season it with an Italian spice blend and add some cayenne for a kick. But you can add any herbs of your choice and skip cayenne too.
Then, I spread an even layer of shredded cheese. I personally like using cheddar cheese or freshly grated parmesan cheese for this recipe. You can customize it with your favorite cheese.
Now, place a sheet of plastic wrap on top of the cheese, and using a rolling pin, or a heavy bottom skillet, press down the cheese into the dough. We want it to stick to the dough as much as possible.
Remove the wrap and cut the dough in 1 inch strips. I find it easier to cut the dough into thirds, following the three divisions. Then, it’s easier for me to cut it into three even strips per panel.
Carefully lift each strip from both edges and start twisting in the opposite direction. How much you twist it, will haven an impact on the end texture. If you prefer a more bread-like crispness, twist it in big turns. But if you like it extra crispy, twist it real tight.
Place them on a lined baking tray. Sprinkle any leftover cheese over the top and bake in a pre-heated oven at 400°F, for about 13-15 minutes. Allow them to cool for 15 minutes after baking, to turn crisp.
